Clara Bensen, author of No Baggage: A Minimalist Tale of Love and Wandering, describes our process:
"The first time I met Abe I sat at her kitchen table and cried. My manuscript was due to the publisher in a matter of weeks and it wasn’t quite where it needed to be. Abe made me a cup of tea and said, “I’m going to help you get this finished.” And she did. Together we plotted a timeline that—to my surprise—included dedicated breaks for creative recharge in addition to standard revision goals.
Despite the tight deadline, Abe went over every chapter, editing individual sentences with a fine-toothed comb and zooming out to suggest changes in structural flow. Her sensitivity to diverse readers was especially invaluable for the travel-based portions of my memoir."
Katie Matlack, Journalist:
"Abe's work is magic. I can walk in the door with ten pages of notes for an article and walk out two hours later with a narrowly-focused paragraph-by-paragraph outline that's ready to write from."
Tyler Davis, MFA, poet:
"Over 12 appointments, I wrote many poems and clarified my goals for my writing. Abe played an instrumental role as a sounding board while I determined that I wanted to commit to applying to an M.F.A. program. She wrote letters of recommendation and helped edit my personal statement and poetry portfolio. I am now beginning my third term at the Bennington Writing Seminars, and am confident my work with Abe enabled that leap!”
Azure Osborne-Lee, New York City, Roots & Rivers Creative Director, says:
"Abe is a wonderful and sensitive coach, providing insightful comments and unwavering support. I would recommend her to anyone looking to delve deeper into their practice and connect with their best selves!"
Mark Creasy, software engineer and letter-aficionado:
"Finding Abe was huge for me as a writer.
Big picture, she helped me find my medium (letter writing), which suits me perfectly — I want an intimate conversation with someone I connect with. She helped me see what is unique about my writing, the voice and my purpose .
Small picture, she gave me tools to work with. I had no idea how to edit my work! When I tried, I inevitably cut out what made my pieces endearing. Abe taught me how to move between edit mode and creative mode. How to reorder and cut, but also to keep my voice intact.
Looking back on my coaching experience now, the thing I am most grateful is the gentleness that Abe took toward my work and the inspiration I felt after each session. Writing is a deeply personal endeavor and I suspect callous treatment would have been a major setback or turned me off from it completely. My experience was the opposite, my time with Abe left me eager and inspired."
Lorig Hawkins, Farmer and Blogger:
The experience has opened up a new world of writing and reading into my life. Abe’s writing coaching has been nothing but positive for me. I first came to her wanting to work on personal material and she listened carefully to my goals and helped guide me with prompts, readings and other materials to help my process. She was always patient, gave great feedback and broke down rules and trends of writing and the writing world in ways that felt comfortable and easily digestible. I continue to work with her and her coaching has inspired me to work on more projects beyond just personal work.
